Ferche Millworks - Fire Rated Jamb Specifications

Ferche fire rated 45, 60 and 90 minute wood frames are made using a durable laminated core, incorporating an inorganic intumescent compound that expands when exposed to heat in a fire.

Veneer faces with matching edge strips, in a variety of wood species, gives the architect and designer the flexibility to integrate the beauty of matching wood frames into a fire rated door system.

Carpenters love it because it’s easy to install and looks like solid wood. Ferche fire rated frames open the door to an entirely new set of options for architects and designers who require fire-resistance, but were previously limited to metal frames. Construction for hospitality and multi-family units will never be the same.

Door Frames are sold by sets which include jamb sides, head and respective T-stops. Window Frames are sold by individual components on a lineal foot basis. Pieces are stamped with Warnock Hersey certification and must be machined by a WHI certified door hanger to receive a 20 minute label.

Installation must be done in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. A pressure-sensitive smoke gasket (category “H”) must be attached to the frame as part of the rated assembly, which gives the frame a “S” label rating.

A positive pressure certification may be achieved with the addition of an edge sealing gasket (category “G”). NOTE: A positive pressure frame may be used with a category “B” door for a positive pressure opening.

45, 60 and 90 minute jambs are manufactured by Ferche using one of two core materials. FyreWerks® laminated core will be used except when door openings exceed FyreWerk’s maximum opening size of 4’0” x 8’0”. Jambs are 3/4” (+/- 1/16) thick.

Georgia Pacific’s “Firestop®” composite mineral core substrate with inorganic intumescent compound, will be used for larger openings, up to 8’0” x 9’0”. Frame is 1-1/32” thick. Both frame types are suitable for positive pressure certification. “S” label certification is achieved with the proper Category “H” , or smoke/draft control gasket.

These jambs are certified by Warnock Hersey (Intertek Testing) and must be machined by a company registered with them. Installation must be done in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
 

Ferche Millwork - Statement of Environmental Stewardship

Ferche Millwork is committed to responsible management and use of the forest products resources used to produce the fire rated frames. At the Ferche Mount Pleasant lumber facility, random width and length lumber is received from sawmills, many of which are located in the Appalachian region of the United States. The Appalachian region is recognized by the United States Forest Service as a “Sustainable Hardwood Forest”. This lumber is air dried for an appropriate period of time, and then kiln dried in kilns powered by sawdust from nearby sawmills.

Kiln dried lumber is then ripped in Ferche's manufacturing facilities where technology “optimizes” each individual board to maximize its use. Each “optimized” board will yield moulder blanks of various widths. These blanks are chopped into a variety of lengths eliminating any natural or manufactured defects. Longer lengths are processed into mouldings and shorter lengths find their way into component parts, edge trim or fingerjoint core for veneer operations. Sawdust, shavings and fines are burned to produce steam that powers the Minnesota kilns and heats the manufacturing buildings. Excess residues are sold into the agricultural and fuel markets, resulting in no waste.

In April of 2009, Ferche Millwork was granted Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody Certification by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), who is accredited by the FSC to certify companies to their international standards. While many certification systems provide assurances that the resources are responsibly managed, FSC is the only system currently accepted under the United States Green Building Council’s LEED program.
